Master musicians, The Gloaming, create an Irish music, the likes of which you've never heard before.
Making their New Zealand debut at Auckland Arts Festival 2015, this five piece supergroup proves that whilst Irish music may have spread far and wide, nothing before has prepared audiences for the unique sound the Irish Times has described as revelatory.
Most of The Gloaming's work takes traditional Irish forms, and revives them in a contemporary context, in the process uniting musical virtuosos who come at Irish music from different perspectives.
Six-time All Ireland Fiddle Champion, Martin Hayes, and his longtime partner, guitarist Dennis Cahill keep The Gloaming grounded in the traditional. So does Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, who plays the fiddle, five-string viola, and hardanger fiddle. Vocalist Iarla Ó Lionáird shares their approachhes a master of the sean-nós (in the old way) a-cappella song style. But, bucking tradition, he has recorded a number of ground breaking albums with the Afro Celt Sound System.
Add to that Thomas Bartlett, a young piano player and songwriter who has worked with everyone from David Byrne to Laurie Anderson to Sam Amidon, and the sum total is music thats unexpected and distinctively The Gloamings own.
