RAW: PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT

(AOTEAROA/NEW ZEALAND)

12 March –- 15 March 2015
Loft, Q Theatre

RAW - three masterpieces in the making - premieres at Auckland Arts Festival 2015 from Thursday 12 March – - Sunday 15 March at Loft, Q Theatre.

Hand-picked by Festival artistic director Carla van Zon, each project is presented in-the-raw as works in development and rehearsals.

“RAW is about first stages,” says Carla Van Zon. “It allows artists to choose different ways to create work and for the public to be part of that process.”

“This could be anything from observing the hard work that goes into creating a production, to engaging with the artists and their processes through workshops and talks,” she says.

RAW is supported by Q Theatre and Creative New Zealand.

THE RAW SESSIONS:

FALESEA

Concept by Nathaniel Lees, with John Pule, Tuilagi Igelese Ete   and Bill Urale.

Falesea is a work being developed for the stage using a fono matai process. Fono matai is based on the shared experiences and ideas of senior level artists with strong cultural connections.  This session presents the results of the fono as the artists share their thoughts about how they envisage Fales growing out of this uniquely Pacific focused process.

In Falesea,  three incarnations of Aituilelagi, the female Spirit of the Pacific, meet Jehovah’s missionaries as they surge into the Pacific.

Co-funded by Auckland Arts Festival and New Zealand Festival.

STAR NAVIGATOR

Tim Finn and New Zealand Opera

Join Tim Finn and a cast of singers and musicians to delve into musical excerpts from his new work Star Navigator, based on the true story of Tupaia, a Tahitian priest, artist and navigator who sailed with James Cook on the Endeavour’'s maiden voyage.

The main characters will come to life on stage for the first time, and between them will highlight the competing realities of Cook, with his sextant, almanac and highly sophisticated compasses, and Tupaia with his training in reading the natural signs, the stars, the currents, the colour of clouds and movement of birds.

The Star Navigator workshop will be followed by a discussion about the work.

Commissioned by West Australian Opera, New Zealand Opera and Victorian Opera with funding from the Government of Western Australia through the Department of Culture and the Arts, with the support of Auckland Arts Festival.
