THE BOOK OF EVERYTHING

AN AUCKLAND ARTS FESTIVAL AND SILO THEATRE CO-PRODUCTION
(AOTEAROA/NEW ZEALAND)

Adapted by Richard Tulloch from the novel by Guus Kuijer
Directed by Sophie Roberts

14 March – 22 March 2015
Rangatira, Q Theatre

Magical and beautifully moving, The Book of Everything is an enchanting stage adaptation of the classic children’s story, by Guus Kuijer.

Directed by Silo’s new artistic director, Sophie Roberts, this co-production tells the story of nine-year-old Thomas, who sees things that others don’t – a plague of green frogs, a hailstorm in summer, tropical fish in the canals of Amsterdam, where he lives. He’s keeping a diary, The Book of Everything, in which he records all that he sees. And one day, he writes his greatest wish: ‘When I grow up, I’m going to be happy.’

It’s 1951, and to escape an unhappy household and a violent father, Thomas creates a magical world where anything is possible – odd encounters with Jesus, friendship with the witch next door and falling in love for the very first time. Eventually he starts to learn how to be brave.

Created especially for young people, Australian author Richard Tulloch’s adaptation of The Book Of Everything is a theatre favourite for all ages, and has played to audiences from New York, to Sydney, to London.

A major new co-production from Auckland Arts Festival and Silo Theatre, this is stunning theatre for the whole family. Recommended for ages 9 – 90.
