(UNITED KINGDOM)

CO-PRODUCED BY SADLER’S WELLS LONDON, MC2: GRENOBLE, HELLERAU – EUROPEAN CENTER FOR THE ARTS DRESDEN, LES THÉÂTRES DE LA VILLE DE LUXEMBOURG

Aotea Centre

From Akram Khan, choreographer of a major section of the spectacular London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, comes iTMOi(in the mind of igor), a dance work that goes for gold.

Making its New Zealand debut at the Aotea Centre during Auckland Arts Festival 2015, iTMOi(in the mind of Igor) is Khan's latest full-length ensemble piece.

Imaginative and intelligent, prepare for a mind-blowing dance and performance work that showcases Khan’'s choreographic genius as well as the groundbreaking vision of Russian composer Igor Stravinsky and his most famous ballet,The Rite of Spring.

With its disruptive music and outrageous design, The Rite of Spring sent shock waves through the audience when it was first performed in 1913. Khan'’s award-winning iTMOi lures us into Stravinsky'’s complex mind, a mind that transformed the shape of classical music and turned the world on its head.

Kahn'’s company of stupendous dancers mix modern dance and traditional Kathak to produce indescribable movements shot through with an original vitality. A group of extraordinary composers, including Nitin Sawhney, have created pulsing sounds new to the ear, giving this mythical work about love, marriage, faith and sacrifice its rich and delicate poetry.

It’'s a mind-boggling, must-see work.

English-born of Bangladeshi descent, Akram Khan trained as a child in the Indian classical dance form Kathak before moving to contemporary dance in his teens. He has been the recipient of numerous international dance awards, including an Olivier Award for his solo production DESH in 2012. He has also been recognised with an MBE for his contribution to the UK dance community.

Formed 14 years ago, the Akram Khan Company is one of the foremost innovative dance companies in the world.

Khan has been choreographer-in-residence and associate artist at the Southbank Centre,  the first non-musician to be afforded this status. He has danced with Juliette Binoche in the dance drama piece In-i, and choreographed for Kylie Minogue’'s Showgirls tour.

Khan is currently an associate artist at Sadler's Wells Theatre.

A feat of super-human movement...you’ve never seen anything like this***** – Time Out Sydney
