OTHELLO: THE REMIX

CHICAGO SHAKESPEARE THEATER & Richard Jordan Productions
(USA)

13 March –- 16 March & 18 March 2015
Bruce Mason Centre and Vodafone Events Centre

Turning up the volume on Shakespeare's classic, Chicago Shakespeare Theater and hip hop sensations, Q Brothers, are bringing their smash international hit Othello: The Remix to Auckland Arts Festival 2015.

Like thousands of fans from Chicago, London’'s Shakespeare Globe Theatre, Edinburgh and Sydney Festivals, Kiwis will be embracing this theatrical ad-rap-tation of the Bard’'s famous tragedy when it hits the Bruce Mason Theatre from 13 -  – 16 March and the Vodafone Events Centre on March 18, 2015.

Othello: The Remix is an innovative, intelligent and utterly genius take on the iconic play.  MC Othello gets out of the ghetto and goes straight to the top. He wins the respect of the music industry, the adulation of fans and the heart of the beautiful singer Desdemona. But he’'s also attracted the spite of hip-hop purist Iago, who has something more sinister planned for Othello than a rap battle.

It'’s an intense, high-energy version of Othello like no other, – proving that Shakespeare was the original master of rhythm and rhyme.

Starring the linguistically dexterous Q Brothers siblings GQ and JQ -  rappers and a DJ, this is hip-hop and The Bard as you’'ve never experienced either before!

Musicians, actors, writers, educators and DJ's, Chicago homies the Q Brothers have made a critically acclaimed brand out of Shakespearean rap, touring internationally with Funk It Up About Nothin' (their version of Much Ado About Nothing),  an adaptation of A Comedy of Errors, and A Mad-Summer Night’s Dream.

The siblings plan to eventually create hip-hop translations of all of Shakespeare's works.

"“We treat the work with respect and we think he was a genius,"” says GQ.

“"But our philosophy is, you want to live on as an art form 500 years later, you can't do it the same way,”" he says.

In fact, the Q Brothers say that if Shakespeare was around today he’d be doing something very similar.

"Absolutely brilliant... just as Shakespeare helped shape English, rap has dramatically refashioned it" - Chicago Sun-Times

"A killer show" –- Chicago Tribune
